Vision
Empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by creating a working environment in the Queensland Public Sector where they can contribute, learn and grow.
Mission
To improve the employment rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Queensland Public Sector.
Background
In 2000 the Queensland Government recognised unemployment rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples were unacceptably high and conceived an initiative to increase Indigenous employment within the Queensland Public Service.
In July 2001 the Wal Meta Unit was established to seek equity in employment and economic status for Queensland's Indigenous population.
Wal-Meta's formation transpired in direct response to the Review of Public Sector Attraction and Retention Strategies to maximise the Employment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.
Wal-Meta is dedicated to working with government agencies to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples achieve equity with non-Indigenous Australians in terms of employment and economic status. It also seeks to ensure employment equity is complementary with Indigenous social and cultural values.
Accordingly, Wal-Meta works with Commonwealth and local government agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to recruit, train and retain Indigenous people in the Queensland Public Sector.
Wal-Meta's development is guided by its strategic plan which clearly articulates the Unit's goals and direction. Tantamount to this plan is the aim to achieve outcomes, including:
- Increased public sector employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Skilling of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples for employment within the public sector.
- Development and implementation of relevant employment, training and career pathing services.
- Tangible and positive collaboration and partnerships with Wal-Meta stakeholders.
- A diverse unit capable of delivering solutions to clients which address their needs with regard to employment, development and advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Leading the way for employment, career development and advancement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Queensland Public Sector.
- Positive partnerships and collaborations which improve Wal-Meta capabilities.
Wal-Meta is committed to:
- Fostering a Public Sector environment which encourages innovation, learning and growth.
- Operating in accordance with the Queensland Government's high ethical standards in its dealings with clients and community.
- Creating an environment which fosters trust, integrity, dignity and respect.
- Encouraging open and honest communication to facilitate the empowerment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
- Promoting and endorsing social justice, cultural values and workforce diversity.
Wal-Meta recognises the importance of communication and consultation with
stakeholders in the ongoing development, implementation and review of its
strategic direction and consequent activities to ensure the Unit continues to evolve in a manner
acceptable to stakeholders and in-line with government policy direction.
