About this program

The Wal-Meta Leadership program is designed specifically for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Queensland Public Sector employees operating at the AO2-AO6 level and equivalent. Since its inception in 1993 the Program has produced more than 180 graduates, with 70% of these participants moving into higher positions within the Queensland Public Sector (QPS).

In 2004 the Stepping Stones Program (AO2-AO3) and the Moving into Management Program (AO4-AO5) were combined to form the 'Wal-Meta Advancement Program' - now the Wal-Meta Leadership Program. In doing this, the Wal-Meta Unit sought to take the focus away from employment levels and positioned the focus back on each individual's particular needs.

The program is very thorough with an emphasis on pro-active learning through quality on-the-job work experience, accredited and non-accredited training. Participants will undertake challenging practical on-the-job training gaining exposure to policy development, undertaking research tasks and project management. The workplace supervisor will provide on-the-job training with a focus on building competencies and assist with completing units.

Accredited/study components

The accredited component is an integral and compulsory part of the program. Participants will undertake a Diploma of Government. The coursework will be delivered through a flexible study mode, with the use of print-based materials and workplace assessments. Participants will be required to undertake a great deal of reading and research relevant to the program, including information contained in the units and other related activities. A flexible approach will be adopted to cater for the varying needs of participants.

The non-accredited component of the program is delivered through (3) – (1) week block training sessions. These training blocks are compulsory for participants to attend. Consistent with the aims of the Program, the training provided on these blocks will be tailored to meet participant's needs. Areas of study will include emotional intelligence, indigenous leadership, assertiveness skills, project management and time management.
