Program Objectives
This accredited course in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness aims to identify specific issues and barriers that may exist with current service delivery, and assist participants to consider the impact of these issues on the quality of service delivery to their clients. The delivery flexibility of Mura Ama Wakaana – People Working Together, allows for tailoring to suit the organisational needs of the client.

Program Outline
Mura Ama Wakaana – People Working Together is a core cultural awareness training package for the Queensland Public Sector.
It has been developed in response to the Royal Commission's report into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody (recommendation 210), and is just one resource available to assist public sector agencies in delivering their services to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people.
Mura Ama Wakaana has been developed in consultation with representatives from Aboriginal communities, Torres Strait Islander communities and public sector agencies across Queensland.
Mura Ama Wakaana is set out in modules, allowing the trainer to tailor programs to suit a variety of audiences. It is designed to give workers a broad introduction to some of the main issues when working in a cross-cultural setting with Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islander people, and is not intended to give all the answers.
Course Outcomes
On successful completion of this accredited course in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Awareness, learners will be able to:
- Provide an overview of Australian history with an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander focus
- Identify and understand major changes to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures following colonisation
- Understand the impacts of racism on contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander attitudes
- Describe major features of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and societies
- Understand and appreciate the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and lifestyles and the relevance and use of protocols.
